Once again… we’re in that ideal “mid-February through April” window for planting potatoes. Ours are boxed certified-organic seed potatoes from Netherland Bulb Company containing 6 tubers per box. If you want an idea of how many to plant for a certain yield… under ideal conditions expect a 1:10 ratio of pounds of seed potato planted to pounds of potato crop harvested. 3-5 pounds of potatoes per plant is another suggested yield.

Our potatoes are sold as whole seed potatoes. You can plant smaller potatoes whole, but you will want to cut larger potatoes into sections containing at least 2 eyes. Let them “callus over” by drying on a paper plate or paper towels for a couple days to discourage rot.

Check out Laura from Garden Answer’s video on planting potatoes. She gives you some great visuals and tips on how to approach potato planting. Do some additional Googling, because you can also grow potatoes in the ground and in pots and even cages!
