With outdoor dining and social distancing in effect for the foreseeable future, I’ve decided to create an outdoor room that I’ll be able to use all Fall and Winter as a safe gathering space for friends and family. Even though indoor dining is being allowed in some places, COVID-19 spikes could cause a ban on indoor dining again. We’ve all kind of found our groove with ordering food to-go, and meeting in front yards six plus feet apart.

What happens when the weather turns wet and cold? The New York Times recently reported plans for their restaurants to continue outdoor dining even through winter! How will they accomplish that? They’ll need waterproof overhead coverage and outdoor heaters. We can apply that concept in our own yards, even for events like Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas! It’s important to continue traditions during the pandemic, to retain a sense of normalcy. Life goes on, even in a pandemic.

What you’ll Need

1. An overhead, open air waterproof covering

Look for waterproof shade sails or canopies that provide overhead coverage but remain “open air “below. I found this one from Shelter Logic.

I’ve used these around the nursery for quick pop-up shade and shelter from the rain. I like them so much, I got one for home. Two people or two couples can safely gather under this.

2. Individual or family seating for family groupings or individuals. Combine bistro sets or lounge chairs like this Fermob Monceau Low Armchair with side tables, 6+ feet apart for cozy dining and conversation areas.

3. Outdoor rugs to create separate but cozy seating areas

4. Outdoor heaters

5. Lighting. We carry rechargeable Fermob Balad Lamps.

6. Bring your own to-go food from your favorite eatery! Avoid sharing food or utensils and encourage use of hand sanitizer.

7. Wear masks

8. Have fun!
